A Cup of Comfort for the Grieving Hearts
When a loved one passes away, comfort is often fleeting and hard to come by. Yet, even a small comfort, like a personal story of how someone has faced a similar loss, does help to ease the sorrow. This volume will feature uplifting personal stories that reveal the special relationships and extraordinary experiences shared by the deceased and his/her loved one(s) immediately before, during, and after the loved one's passing; it will also includes stories about the internal and external processes by which one deals with and heals from the loss of a loved one. The stories will vary with regard to subject matter, circumstances of death, and the relationship of the author to the individual who has passed away. The book will not include eulogies, profiles/memoirs of people who have passed away, or clinical depictions of death and dying.

A Cup of Comfort for Fathers
The connection between father and child can be as deep as the ocean, as strong as a mountain, and as uplifting as fresh air. For all its rewards, though, fatherhood is not without its challenges. And for all the gifts dads bring to their kids' lives, dads sometimes falter and fumble. Yet, the father-child bond forms, holds, and grows. A Cup of Comfort for Fathers will feature inspiring and insight true stories about the life-defining and life-enriching relationships and experiences shared by fathers and their children. These personal essays will be of varying topics and tones (heartwarming, humorous, poignant, provocative, etc.); about fathers and children of all ages and varying circumstances; and written by fathers, daughters, and sons.

The 17th annual Tom Howard/John H. Reid Short Story Contest is sponsored by Tom Howard Books. Any type of original short story, essay or other work of prose is eligible. Prizes totaling $5,350 will be awarded, including a top prize of $2,000. Click here to read winning entries from the past.

Submission Period
Entries accepted July 15-March 31 (postmark dates). Early submission is encouraged.

What to Submit
Short stories, essays or other works of prose, up to 5,000 words each. There are no restrictions on style or theme. Each entry should be your own original work. You may submit the same work simultaneously to this contest and to others, and you may submit works that have been published or won prizes elsewhere, as long as you own the online publication rights.

$1,000 Prize for a single metrical poem. Includes an invitation (with honorarium) to read for The Hyla Brook Reading Series at the Frost Farm
in Derry, New Hampshire in the summer of 2011.

Complete Guidelines:

Poems must be original, unpublished and metrical (any metrical form). No translations. There is no limit to the number of poems entered by an
individual, but an entry fee of $5 US per poem must accompany the submission (entry fees from outside the United States must be paid in cash or by check drawn on a U.S.bank). Make checks payable to the "Trustees of the Robert Frost Farm." Please type the author's name, address, phone number and e-mail address on the back of each entry. Entries will be submitted to the judge anonymously.

The Thomas Wolfe Fiction Prize honors internationally celebrated North Carolina novelist Thomas Wolfe. The winner receives $1,000 and possible publication in the Thomas Wolfe Review.

Eligibility and Guidelines
The competition is open to all writers without regard to geographical region or previous publication.
Submit two copies of an unpublished fiction manuscript not to exceed 12 double-spaced pages.
Names should not appear on manuscripts but on separate cover sheet along with address, phone number, e-mail address, word count, and
manuscript title.

An entry fee must accompany the manuscript: $15 NCWN for members, $25 for nonmembers. You may pay the member entry fee if you join the NCWN with your submission. Checks should be made payable to the North Carolina Writers’ Network. Entries will not be returned.

Call for Submissions: New Self-Help Book for Teens

What’s your success secret? How did you find the courage to try out for the sports team or to stick up for a friend getting bullied? What helped you to overcome a huge mistake, deal with a family crisis, or accept your body for the way it is? How did you break out of the mold and try something new?

We want to know what success secret helped you the most as a teen. On the flip side, we’d also love to hear what tips and tricks you wish you had known as a teen. What would have helped you to enjoy life more, maintain healthier relationships, or avoid dangerous pitfalls?

In your submission, describe the situation you were in and what success secret helped you to arrive at a solution. You might also suggest practical ways teens can start applying your advice to their own lives.

Entries should be approximately 150-700 words. If your submission is chosen for publication, we will pay you $50 for all rights to publish it in an anthology. Deadline: January 24, 2011. Send your submission to snagel@sps.com.

Nurturing Paws, is currently accepting positive and uplifting short stories and poems that illustrate the healing power of animals in our lives. The deadline is March 15, 2011 and there is no submission fee.
